Energy Use

Here's how we make smart, efficient energy decisions within our business.

DSW Stores
  • Energy-conscious lighting design (at least 30% below ANSI/AHSRAE/IESNA
    standard 90.1-2007
  • Use of ENERGY STAR appliances wherever possible
  • No CFC-based refrigerants
  • Energy management systems and motion sensors keep lights, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems controlled and monitored
  • Plans to replace halogen lamps with LED lamps, reducing wattage from 75 to 18 watts
  • Use of LED lamps in new and remodeled stores in 2015

DSW Home Office, Distribution Center and other Properties
  • Recently, we retrofitted our building at 4485 Northland Ridge Boulevard with new energy efficient LED lighting, reducing the annual energy consumed by lighting by 63%
  • Energy management systems and motion sensors keep lights, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems controlled and monitored
  • Recently, we've also installed skylights in our Distribution Center to reduce
    energy consumption
  • We've recently adopted the utilization of electronically powered forklifts
  • Recently, we have made the following upgrades to our building at 4150 DSW Drive: insulation of exterior walls, replacement and upgrade of all plumbing systems, upgrade of HVAC systems, installation of new energy efficient lighting, removal of walls to take advantage of natural lighting provided by existing windows, and utilization of recycled building materials where possible

Supply Chain
We focus on reducing the number of miles that our product travels—this reduces our carbon footprint. For example:
  • A third-party distribution operation in California handles 45% of our incoming product flow. Over half of that product goes directly to stores, with only the rest of the product traveling back to our Home Office in Columbus, OH by intermodal rail.
  • We use "pooled distribution" to use the least amount of fuel possible in shipping product to our stores. Each of our two distribution centers sends full truckloads to 18 "pool points" throughout the U.S. Then, the cartons are split by store and delivered.
